Restoring Paradise: The Costas Verdes Initiative in Playa Guiones

Nestled between two vast oceans, Costa Rica has over 1000 kilometers of coastal land on the Pacific Ocean. With a passion for protecting his home coastline, Costas Verdes was established in 2009 by Gerardo Bolaños, who has been leading the effort in Guiones for over a decade. This non-profit organization has become a cornerstone of environmental rejuvenation, particularly in our corner of Guanacaste. At the Gilded Iguana, we are proud to support Costas Verdes in their endeavours to paint Costa Rica’s coasts in shades of green once more.

The Genesis of a Green Future

Starting in Playa Hermosa and expanding its roots to Guiones, this active non-profit has aimed to reverse the scars left by prolonged agricultural exploitation, particularly from cattle farming, which rendered the land vulnerable to erosion. With over 39,000 trees planted along the 50-meter coastal stretch by the hands of more than 6,000 volunteers, Costas Verdes has not only restored landscapes but has also rekindled hope. In Playa Guiones alone, 71 native species have been reintroduced, weaving back the ecological tapestry that had thrived for centuries before.

The newly planted forests serve as more than just habitats; they are guardians of the soil, protectors against erosion, and caretakers of the moisture balance. As these trees grow, they not only offer shade and refuge to countless species but also stand as a natural barrier against unchecked development, preserving the essence of Costa Rica’s coastlines.

Costas Verdes operates four nurseries, with the Guiones location nurturing 25 different species of trees, each chosen for its unique role in the ecosystem. This nursery is not just a place of growth for trees but a beacon of community involvement, where tourists, locals, and volunteers come together to plant a future.

Educating for Tomorrow: Seeds of Change

Beyond the tangible greenery, the essence of Costas Verdes’ mission lies in education and community engagement. The BarriGuiones project has not only greened the coast but has also become a fertile ground for learning, with over 30 schools participating regularly. These educational efforts aim to implant a deep-seated respect and understanding for nature in the minds of children and community members alike, ensuring the sustainability of these efforts for generations to come.

A Vision of Green: Looking Ahead

With 73% of its goal achieved in Playa Guiones, Costas Verdes sets its sights on reaching 100% rewilding before moving to Playa Pelada, Playa Ostional, and beyond. This vision of a fully restored coastline is a testament to what collaborative effort, unwavering dedication, and a shared love for the environment can accomplish.

How to Join the Green Movement

Nosara’s charm as a tourist destination is undeniable but it is more than just a scenic escape; it’s a doorway into understanding the importance and impact of environmental conservation efforts. We’re committed to safeguarding this coastline for future generations, ensuring it remains a sanctuary for both humans and wildlife alike.
